Research

My research interests include various aspects of computational intelligence, such as the following:
  • Statistical signal processing, applied in detection and estimation, tracking, fusion, wireless communications, and pattern recognition
  • Prognostics and diagnostics, applied in wind energy systems
  • Swarm intelligence, such as Particle Swarm Optimzation (PSO)
  • Biometrics, especially on face recognition

Bio

I obtained my Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering under Dr. Lisa Osadciw and a M.S. degree in Applied Statistics from Syracuse University. I got my M.S. and B.S. degrees in Control Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, P.R.China. My M.S. project was in collaboration with Dr. Norio Baba at Osaka Kyoiku University, Japan, while I stayed with his group for one year and a half.

Teaching

I have been a teaching associate/assistant at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • BEN/ELE352 "Digital Signal Processing" (undergraduate level), Spring 2007, 2008
  • BEN/ELE351 "System and Signal Analysis" (undergraduate level), Fall 2007
  • ELE755 "Digital Image Processing" (graduate level), Summer 2007
  • ELE601 "Applications of Complex Function Theory" (graduate level), Fall 2006
  • ELE291/292 "Electrical Enginnering Laboratory I & II" (undergraduate level), Fall 2005, Spring 2006
  • ELE651 "Digital Communications" (graduate level), Spring 2004
  • ELE551 "Communication Systems" (senior and graduate level), Fall 2003
Here is a summary of my experiences and responsiblities.
  • Helped develop the syllabus. Prepared and gave some lectures.
  • Gave a lecture impromptu when the professor was sick. Tutored MATLAB programming.
  • Taught three or two recitation sessions weekly. Supervised three four-hour lab sessions weekly.
  • Selected assignment problems. Designed MATLAB assignments.
  • Held office hours. Made assignment solutions. Graded lab reports, assignments, and tests.
  • Updated independent course websites or blackboard.syr.edu. Answered questions through emails.

Personal

Here are some of my favoriate books, quotes, or links.
  • "The One Thing Holding You Back: Unleashing the Power of Emotional Connection" by Raphael Cushnir
  • "Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life" by Byron Katie
  • "You and your research" by Richard Hamming.
  • "How can we pursue a Ph.D. degree without regrets?" by Dr. Minh N. Do.
  • "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." by Winston Churchill
  • "Take Control" by Ralph S. Marston, Jr.

The only way to control your own life is to take responsibility for it. Yes, there are always circumstances to blame. Yes, there are those who would hold you back. Yes, there are things beyond your control. Take responsibility anyway. People who achieve greatness, believe that whatever happens to them, they are responsible for it. It may seem unfair, yet it is ultimately liberating. Whining will get you nowhere. Stepping up and taking responsibility, puts you in control. Take responsibility. Even if it's not your fault, it's your life. Even if it's not your assignment, it's your job. You have a choice. You can always find someone, or something, to blame, and thereby allow circumstances and other people to control your life. Or, you can step up and take responsibility, no matter what. That puts you firmly in control, and gives you the power to live your life the way you choose.
